Zane Smith Gambles on Fuel and Weather; Scores Rain Shortened Pocono Victory – PTD Exclusive
BY JEFF WITHEY
LONG POND, PA – The weather was looming off in the distance and the push to get to half way was the goal for most of the field. Just past the halfway point of the 60-lap affair, rain and lots of it washed out the rest of the ModSpace 150 giving Zane Smith of Huntington Beach, California the win. The win was the 3rd of his career, all of which have come this year for the 19-year-old who is in his second year of ARCA racing.
29 cars started the ModSpace 150 with Gus Dean of Bluffton, SC leading the field to the green. With just 7 laps in of the 60 scheduled laps, pole sitter Gus Dean found himself in trouble. Dean spun going over the tunnel turn. He was running 4th at the time he brought out the caution. Just a few laps later while still under yellow he returned to pit road. The right front wheel had somehow been pushed back towards the cockpit of the car ending his day early.
The field went back to work on lap 13 where Zane Smith took control of the lead. Just one lap later, Joe Graf Jr. of Mahwah, NJ crashed hard into the third turn wall bringing out the caution flag again.
The race restarted on lap 19 with Zane Smith had the helm still. A hard charging Sheldon Creed of Alpine, CA was following closely never letting Smith get to far out in front.
With 28 laps in Smith had company for the lead as he and Sheldon Creed raced down the front stretch. Sheldon Creed got sideways and nearly wrecked the leader at the same time. He was able to save the car and continued but couldn’t overtake Smith for the lead.
5 of the top 6 cars hadn’t pitted yet but the skies began to darken over the backstretch.
The race to halfway was on. The caution flag flew on lap 31 for possible moisture in turn 3. The field was brought down pit road just 2-laps later. As the field hit pit road, the skies unleashed with torrential rain and violent lightning. The race was deemed official since it had passed the halfway point.
Rounding out the rest of the top 6 were Sheldon Creed, Chase Purdy, Harrison Burton, Riley Herbst, and Todd Gilliand. Gilliand was the only car of the top 6 to have pitted. He pitted on lap 17.
The next ARCA race is August 19th at the Illinois State Fairgrounds for the Allen Crowe 100.
